Invision Community — formerly Invision Power Board (IPB) — is a mature platform with forums, applications, themes, and a large marketplace. ForumForge is for teams that want a focused community product without assembling multiple IPS apps, renewals, and hosting layers over time.
As with any forum migration, the goal is not to recreate every legacy thread on day one. It is to launch a cleaner structure, preserve what members still use, and give staff modern moderation and admin tools from the start.
Why communities move off Invision
Invision can do a lot, but many communities only use a fraction of the suite while still paying for complexity, extensions, and operational overhead.
- —Application sprawl across forums, Pages, Commerce, and third-party plugins
- —Renewal and hosting costs that grow with add-ons and support tiers
- —Staff workflows spread across IPS admin areas and customizations
- —Desire for ForumForge hosted operations or a clearer self-hosted license
Step 1: Map forums, groups, and apps
Export your mental model of the community before touching content. List boards, member groups, moderator teams, paid tiers, Pages content, and any Commerce flows that must survive the move.
- —Active forums and high-traffic threads
- —Staff, moderator, and member group permissions
- —Rules, announcements, and CMS-style pages
- —Subscriptions, products, or paid access paths
Step 2: Rebuild structure in ForumForge
ForumForge categories, forums, groups, and permissions replace much of what IPS spreads across applications. Use the migration to remove dead boards, merge duplicates, and create a navigation structure members can understand quickly.
Clubs, custom pages, forms, and commerce can be configured inside ForumForge rather than as separate apps stitched together.
Step 3: Handle members and identity
Plan how existing members will authenticate on launch day. Some communities ask users to re-register with a verified email, others use invite campaigns, and some import accounts where a supported path exists.
Tell members early why the move is happening: faster site, clearer community areas, better moderation, or lower long-term cost.
Step 4: Content, SEO, and archives
Identify URLs that rank in search or get linked from docs and support articles. Keep those guides visible at launch, even if the full historical archive arrives later or stays read-only elsewhere.
Step 5: Launch with moderation ready
Configure reports, warnings, bans, saved moderator actions, and staff review flows before opening the doors. IPS communities often rely on long-standing moderator habits — document the new workflows so staff confidence stays high on day one.
